City Nature Challenge 2022: Alachua County

Be part of the worldwide City Nature Challenge right here in Alachua County! Upload photos of plants and animals you observe in Alachua County to iNaturalist to help scientists and researchers get a better picture of our local biodiversity. Your yard/neighborhood is perfect for this! iNaturalist can actually help identify your photos!

When to do what:
April 29-May 2 - Take pictures of plants and animals, and start uploading them to iNaturalist
May 8 - Finish uploading your photos so they can be identified
Remember, only photos taken by May 2 will be counted on the challenge!

How to use iNaturalist:
Use a camera or smartphone to take pictures of plants or animals here in Alachua County. Make sure that your geolocator of your camera or smartphone is turned on. Upload the photo to the iNaturalist app or website with accurate location and the photo gets recorded in the challenge for our county. Clear, focused pictures cropped to show the plant or animal work best

What is the City Nature Challenge?
This is a global event organized by California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. In Alachua, the City Nature Challenge is organized by University of Florida IFAS Extension, Florida Museum of Natural History. Collaborating partners in Alachua are University of Florida Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Alachua County Department of Environmental Protection, City of Gainesville Parks, and Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo.
