Mrs. Trunchbull (Adult)
Voice: Baritone, high note F4, low note C3
A former Olympic hammer-throwing champion, is now the terrifying, tyrannical headmistress of Crunchem Hall. Miss Trunchbull believes the motto of her school wholeheartedly--“Bambinatum Est Magitum” or “Children are Maggots”--and proves it with punishing physical education classes, arbitrary rules (no pigtails), and the menacing “Chokey,” a cell filled with pieces of glass and nails so locked-up students can’t sit or stand. Agatha Trunchbull is the aunt of the lovely teacher Miss Honey, and has robbed her of her inheritance.
Matilda (Child)
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, high note C5, low note A4
An exceptionally small girl with an exceptionally large brain. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, find Matilda and her intellect appalling, so she finds escape in reading books and inventing stories. Despite the hard knocks she’s had, Matilda has spunk and a bit of a naughty streak that keeps her in control of her own story. Matilda is fearless, outspoken and always willing to stand up to bullies to protect her friends.
Mrs. Wormwood (Adult)
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, high note D5, low note A4
She never wanted Matilda in the first place. On the day of Matilda’s birth, Mrs. Wormwood was shocked to find out she was even pregnant. She is an amateur salsa dance competitor, and her
wardrobe and makeup compete with her demeanor in terms of “Loud”-ness. She thinks Matilda is a “lousy little worm,” and wants to be rid of her. Despite this, she loves her son Michael, who
does not challenge her in any way.
Mr. Wormwood (Adult)
Voice: Baritone, high note A5, low note F3
A cruel, abusive, and dishonest used car salesman. His goal is to make money through scheming, stealing, and lying. He teases Matilda for her love of reading, and thinks she should watch more “telly.” He wanted a boy and refuses to accept the fact that Matilda is a girl. All Mr. Wormwood wants is for Matilda to be more like his son Michael. His lack of intelligence allows
Matilda to trick and play pranks on him.
Miss Honey (Adult)
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, high note E5, low note F3
Is the kindergarten teacher at Crunchem Hall, and despite Miss Trunchbull’s punishing rules, she believes in her students’ intelligence and teaches them to read and write. Miss Honey,
though beloved by the children, is fragile, quiet and rarely stands up for herself. When she takes Matilda under her wing, Matilda helps Miss Honey begin to find her own bravery. By the end of
the show Miss Honey receives all she deserves, proving that grace and kindness for others can take you the farthest.
Bruce Bogtrotter (Child)
Voice: Tenor, high note F5, low note F3
One of Matilda’s classmates. A large boy, Bruce eats a slice of Miss Trunchbull’s chocolate cake, and is punished by having to eat a whole cake in class. He manages, with Matilda and his
classmates’ support. Bruce leads the revolt in “Revolting Children.”
Lavender (Child)
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, high note F5, low note F3
Matilda’s best friend (by her own description), and one of her classmates. She is very smart, but not like Matilda. She is also a bit naughty herself, planting a newt in Miss Trunchbull’s water
after the physical education class.
Mrs. Phelps (Adult)
Voice: Non-Singer
She runs the local library, where Matilda finds refuge. She is warm and loving to Matilda, and loves to listen to her stories. Mrs. Phelps gets deeply involved in Matilda’s stories, often crying
or responding in frustration when Matilda stops.
Michael Wormwood (Any age)
Voice: Tenor, high note A4, low note C3
Matilda’s older brother, Michael, is beloved by their parents. Michael is definitely not the brightest in any room. He spends most of the day in front of the TV, generally only speaking in
single words, mostly his own name.
Amanda Thripp (Child)
Voice: Soprano, high note F5, low note F3
A classmate of Matilda’s. Despite Miss Trunchbull’s rules about pigtails, Amanda wears them because her mother says they look pretty. She pays the price by getting thrown across the playground by her pigtails by Miss Trunchbull.
Nigel (Child)
Voice: Tenor, high note F5, low note F3
One of Matilda’s classmates. He is enthusiastic, but has too high expectations of himself, which leads to disappointment. He seems to always be in a panic, and becomes worried easily.
Eric (Child)
Voice: Tenor, high note F5, low note F3
One of Matilda’s classmates. He struggles with physical education and has his ears pulled by Miss Trunchbull. Eric has the first solo line of the show.
Alice (Child)
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano, high note F5, low note F3
One of Matilda’s classmates. Alice has some solo lines.
Hortensia (Child)
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano, high note F5, low note F3
One of Matilda’s classmates. Hortensia has some solo lines.
Tommy (Child)
Voice: Tenor, high note F5, low note F3
One of Matilda’s classmates. Tommy has some solo lines.
