Every other year, Millhopper Montessori Middle School students “Rock the Bard.” During this unit, they read a Shakespeare play and sonnets, study the cultural aspects of the period, and learn about the life of William Shakespeare. As part of the unit, the students create a Theatrical Portfolio, where they choose a scene to make their own. This allows them to put their spin on the classic tales and explore their creativity. This portfolio includes a cultural overview of the scene and play, a script, character analysis and description, a props list, and the stage pieces list. In Drama class, they bring their scripts to life and prepare to perform their scenes in a Shakespeare Festival for the elementary students. The performance is designed to teach the younger students all about the Bard.

This year, the middle school students will present re-written scenes from Twelfth Night at our biennial Shakespeare Festival. The following scenes will be performed:
Act I Scene 2, and Scene 3 (performed by the 8th graders)
Act I, Scene 4, and Scene 5 (performed by the 6th graders)
Act III, Scene 4 (performed by the 7th graders)

The Shakespeare Festival will also include performances of monologues from A Midsummer Night's Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. It will begin with the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet and end with the entire class performing Puck's final monologue from A Midsummer Night's Dream. The event is produced by Ms. Sylvia Aslanian, the Drama, Debate, and Technology/STEM teacher at MMS. Ms. Sylvia has been teaching at MMS since 1994 and has directed the award-winning Spotlight Kids Performing Arts drama club for over 20 years. The club is a part of the International Junior Thespians, Troupe #88928, and is designed for serious thespians who enjoy competing.
