Experience a step back in time to a bygone day at the 39th Annual Ocklawaha River Raid Civil War Reenactment Living History Weekend. This weekend-long event commemorates the only Civil War battle to occur in Marion County, Florida. The event features hundreds of authentic Union, Confederate, and civilian re-enactors. Wander authentic military camps and civilian homesteads for a look at life as it was during this time period. Feel free to converse with re-enactors many of whom are "walking history books" on the time period and impression they portray. Peruse the History Center for a look at Florida's role in the Civil War. Try your hand at letter writing 19th Century style with pencil or pen and ink at the 1860s post office display. If you wish to write a letter to a re-enactor, it can be delivered in period mail call during the weekend. See displays of all eight flags that flew over the state of Florida. Scavenger hunt for youngsters to find 1860s items among the authentic camps and displays. The highlight of each day takes place at 2:00 PM with authentic battle re-enactments. Muskets will crackle and cannon boom as Union and Confederate forces with infantry, artillery, and cavalry meet in simulated battle.

Event hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM both Saturday and Sunday; a $ 10 donation per carload is requested on site. Program booklet with a history of the original battle, schedule, site map, scavenger hunt list, and other details provided to each carload. Food concessions will be available. Portable chairs, blankets, etc. may be useful for watching the battle re-enactments.
