Alachua Audubon Field Trip: Persimmon Point

  • When: Saturday, November 16, 2024,  8:00 am - 11:00 am
  • Location: Gainesville, FL
  • Cost: Free

Limit 20 attendees. A SignUp Genius sign up will be posted in the event on Sunday, November 3rd.

Attendees will meet field trip leader Bubba Scales on Saturday, November 16th at the location that will be shared with registered attendees for this ranger-accompanied special access hike to Persimmon Point by way of the Rim Ramble trail.

The Rim Ramble Trail traverses the dense upland forest featuring numerous large sinkholes along the northern prairie rim. Persimmon Point is a high promontory of the prairie rim now dominated by Flatwoods Plum and broomsedge. The perched fields on the bluff give way to dense tangles of early successional forests on the slope of the bluff and eventually to marsh and prairie in the basin.

Persimmon Point was the location of last season's Green-tailed Towhee twitch.

Difficulty: 3
This trip includes about three miles of round trip hiking on hiking trails and mowed access paths with some limited potential for uneven and steep terrain.

Here are some items to consider carrying on any field trip: binoculars (a must), water, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, sturdy shoes, rain gear for sudden downpours, notebook, camera, contact information.
