Join the Gainesville Young Birders Club on Sunday, December 21 from 9-11 am at the Paynes Prairie main Visitor Center on Savannah Blvd, accessed from the US-441 main entrance. Please note that park entry is $6 per vehicle or free with a Florida State Parks Pass.
Meet trip leader Maggie Paxson on the steps outside of the Visitor Center where we'll first hike a very short trail to the observation tower. We'll climb the roughly 3-stories of stairs and use our spotting scopes to look for ducks, cranes, and the recently reported visiting (and rare!) snow geese.
Afterwards we'll walk a short trail east from the Visitors Center towards the southern end of Cones Dike trail. Dependent on rain the week before, we have the potential for both sparrows and shorebirds along various points of this trail. We hope to see at least 45 species of birds and lots of other wildlife.
Binoculars provided! Participating students should wear sturdy walking shoes and appropriate clothing. Please bring water and wear sunscreen.
The Gainesville YBC is open to students aged 9-18, but parents and younger siblings with parental supervision are always welcome.
