Florida Museum of Natural History Nocturnal Neighbors: Celebrating National Moth Week

  • When: Saturday, July 26, 2025,  8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
  • Location: Steinmetz Hall - UF Entomology & Nematology Department 1881 Natural Area Drive Gainesville, FL 32608
  • Cost: Pre-registration is required for this FREE event.

Celebrate National Moth Week with Museum experts and discover the wild variety of local moth species! Learn about the history of nocturnal insect collecting and insect conservation efforts, and then join us outdoors to explore our nocturnal neighbors.

Ever wondered how scientists collect and study bugs that are often only active at night? Here's your chance to find out and take part in actual fieldwork with researchers and entomologists. They will show you how they use lights and bed sheets to lure out these often-hidden creatures!

Lepidopterist Vaughn Shirey is hosting two FREE evening events that invite you to accompany scientists on night collecting fieldwork. Wear appropriate footwear and clothes that can get dirty or wet. We will be heading outdoors to explore the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory.

Note: The event ends at 10 p.m. but fieldwork will continue until midnight so you are welcome to stay and see the insects we discover.
