Are cryptids real? In this program, kids will learn how to use real forensic science methods and tools to investigate legendary creatures.
The Kraken (giant squid), the platypus, and the coelacanth are all mythological creatures that really exist today. What makes them different from the legendary Bigfoot or Florida’s own cryptids like Wampus Cat, Skunk Ape, and Hog Kong? Physical evidence that they exist! Scientists began to earnestly verify the existence of the Kraken, the platypus, and the coelacanth only after irrefutable evidence spurred them to look harder.
So, what would you do if you came across a cryptid? There are numerous historical (and even modern-day) eyewitness accounts of a Bigfoot in Alachua County and Wampus Cats in North Florida. If you saw one, would you know how to look for and document evidence of your sighting? Could you be the one who gives scientists the irrefutable evidence that will make them curious enough to finally find a Bigfoot?
Join Hands On Gainesville to explore and practice some hands-on forensic techniques you can use to discover and collect scientific evidence just in case you ever come across a cryptid. Hands-on activities will include making plaster of Paris footprint casts, analyzing hair samples, and more as we delve into historical accounts of cryptid sightings and learn about the field of forensic science.
Registration is highly recommended for this program, due to limited supplies.
