Afro Roots Fest

Afro Roots Fest returns to Gainesville for another Afro-Cuban Convening featuring dance and percussion workshops on Friday, April 5, including Afro-Latin Shorts at the UF School of Theatre + Dance (333 Newell Dr, Gainesville, FL 32611), Afro-Cuban Percussion, African Dance, and Afro-Cuban Orisa at the Gainesville Fine Arts Association Gallery (1314 S. Main Street, Gainesville, FL 32601). All dance classes have a live music accompaniment. A special dance party at Depot Village (404 SE 2nd St, Gainesville, FL 32601) featuring DJ Andres Ponce closes out Day 1 at 8 p.m.

On day Day 2, Saturday, April 6, fans can enjoy a concert by the Odara Afro-Cuban Allstars now featuring Roman Diaz, Ivor Miller, Lazaro Galarraga, Sandy Perez, Barbarito Ramos, and Angel Guerrero at the Hippodrome Theatre (25 SE 2nd Pl, Gainesville, FL 32601), beginning at 7 p.m. The night will also include a film screening of the documentary "Roman Diaz - Como el Agua" by Onel Mulet, which offers an intimate look at the renowned Cuban master drummer and jazz musician.

The festival is being supported by the City of Gainesville, the University of Florida Center for Arts Migration and Entrepreneurship (CAME), School of Music, School of Theater and Dance, Center for Latin American Studies, the College of the Arts, the Greater Gainesville International Center, and Visit Gainesville - Alachua County, FL.
