 he Alachua County Forever land conservation program with a special guided h
 ike at Mill Creek Preserve.\n\nMill Creek Preserve spans 1,230 acres and wa
 s the first property acquired under the original Alachua County Forever bon
 d in 2002. The preserve protects a rich mosaic of natural communities. It i
 s home to one of the southernmost known populations of the American beech (
 Fagus grandifolia), which will be showcased in its fall color during the hi
 ke.\n\nA county arborist will lead the guided hike that will cover 2 to 3 m
 iles along the preserve’s trail system, traversing mostly easy to moderate 
 terrain. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about local ecolog
 y, tree identification and the significance of the preserve’s conservation 
 history.\n\nAttendees are encouraged to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and 
 to bring water and insect repellent. Pets are not permitted on this hike to
  help protect sensitive wildlife and plant communities.
