 ugh newly acquired areas of the Watermelon Pond Preserve. The hike is Sunda
 y, Nov. 23, 2025, from 9 to 11 a.m.<br /><br />County staff and expert bird
 ers Adam and Gina Kent will lead participants through the 136-acre preserve
 , located on County Road 337 (SW 282nd St.) near 11070 SW 118th Place in Ne
 wberry. Because the property has no formal trailhead, hikers should look fo
 r staff and event signs along the roadside.<br /><br />The preserve was for
 med from five acquisitions completed in 2025. As the land is newly purchase
 d and not yet open to the public, there are no designated trails. Participa
 nts will explore the sandhill habitat while learning about local plants and
  wildlife, especially bird species, as well as the Alachua County Forever p
 rogram. The hike will cover about two miles over mostly level, sandy ground
 .<br /><br />There are no restroom facilities on-site, though one is availa
 ble nearby. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and l
 ong pants, and to bring binoculars, insect repellent, sun protection and dr
 inking water.<br /><br />“This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creat
 ion of Alachua County Forever, the county’s land conservation program,” sai
 d Alachua County Land Conservation Program Manager Andi Christman. “We’re e
 xcited to be offering a series of field trips and events this fall in prepa
 ration for our anniversary celebration in December.”
