SUMMARY:Alachua Audubon Field Trip: Bolen Bluff
LOCATION:Bolen Bluff Trail, Micanopy, FL 32667
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Meet Maggie Paxson in the lot. Access trailhead off of 441 south of Gainesv
ille.

With over 230 unique species on its observations list, Bo
len Bluff is a local birding highlight regardless of the time of year. Loca
ted on the Southern rim of Payne's Prairie, this mostly flat trail starts i
n a wooded upland area, rambles along the basin rim of the prairie, and eve
ntually descends into the basin towards a raised observation tower.
<
br />We’ll hike the entirety of the woodland loop as well as the first quar
ter mile of the basin trail for a round-trip total of approximately 2.5 mil
es. Ground is mostly flat with some slight changes in elevation, with a wel
l-tread trail that is also frequented by deer, bison, and wild horses. Targ
et species include migrant warblers; thrushes like Veery, Swainson’s, and G
rey-cheeked; and other migrant passerines like Scarlet Tanagers and Bobolin
ks.

Difficulty: 3, due to distance and some uneven terrain inclu
ding a fair amount of roots.

To bring: binoculars, closed-toe co
mfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, walking stick if needed, water, su
n protection. Bugs can get bad at this location.

Birders of all
ability levels and non-members are always welcome.
