Journey to Juneteenth: The Remembrance Project at Freedom Fest

  • When: Saturday, June 15, 2024,  3:00 pm -  9:00 pm
  • Location: Bo Diddley Plaza, 111 E University Ave, Gainesville, FL 32601
  • Cost: FREE

As part of Freedom Fest's telling the story of Black history in America, this event is will tell truth about our county's history of racial terrorism in the Jim Crow era, when Florida had the highest number of lynchings per capita, and Alachua County was one of the highest. Speakers will talk about our history, and the research, begun by the late Dr. Patricia Hilliard-Nunn to uncover that history. The Alachua County victims of racial terror will be honored with speakers and with the song "Hell You Talm Bout" by Janelle Monae. All will be invited to tour the exhibit about this history in the lobby of the County Commission building. This is sponsored by the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project (ACCRP), a coalition of groups throughout Alachua County working for truth and reconciliation. They work in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative from Montgomery, AL to educate ourselves and our community about the truth, and the legacy that this era of racial terror left, seen in the current racial disparities we struggle with.
